We get the question all the time: Are Cellular Signal Boosters Legal? The answer has always been yes. However, several cellular service providers have worked to stop the sale and use of some signal boosters. Their concern is the negative effect some of these systems have caused to their equipment and service.

In February the U.S. Federal Communications Commission voted unanimously to adopt technical standards for cellular signal boosters. This is a major victory for us and end-users who will benefit from added levels of safety, security and satisfaction with their service through the use of signal boosters.

This vote legitimizes our customers’ use of signal boosters by eliminating any doubt that they are legal, and confirms they are a viable option for drastically reducing dropped calls.

Here are the key points of today’s FCC decision:

  • Beginning March 1, 2014, consumer cellular signal boosters sold in the U.S. will have to comply with the technical standards adopted today by the FCC.
  • Cellular carriers will have the right to approve boosters that use their network. The good news is all 4 major U.S. carriers – AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon – have filed letters of consent with the FCC that they will approve for use on their networks all boosters that meet the technical standards adopted today.
  • Consumers who purchase a booster will be asked to register the device with their carrier. How this process will be implemented is still being determined.

We are pleased with the FCC vote and believes this outcome points to a very positive future for sales of signal boosters. We are confident that the adoption of the technical standards jointly developed and proposed by Wilson, Verizon, and T-Mobile and supported by Sprint and AT&T, further affirms our position as the market leader among booster manufacturers.

We are poised to submit compliant equipment as soon as the FCC sets up the procedure for certification of consumer signal boosters.

We found this four-minute clip posted on YouTube by Marques Brownlee. He provides a very understandable explanation of what 4G is without getting bogged down in technical details.

At one point during the video Marques digresses into a discussion of quad core chips versus dual core, but if you choose to tune out that short segment of the audio you won’t miss any relevant 4G information. Here’s the video link.

One challenge for installers is measuring the cellular received signal strength in order to estimate the coverage area a building signal booster system will provide. If your installation is only concerned with one service provider, it’s fairly easy and straight forward – just put a cell phone into test mode or, for most Android devices, check Settings, About Phone, Status.

However, if you have larger install where you’re required to boost the signal for multiple service providers, you could use a device for each provider or invest in a much more expensive spectrum analyzer.

For professional installers, Wilson Electronics has developed an RF Signal Detector for cellular and for most service providers in the US.

The Wilson RF Signal Detector allows the installer to test downlink signal strength before and after cellular amplifier system installation. It works with the 800 MHz (Cellular), 1900 MHz (PCS), 2100 MHz (AWS) and 700 MHz LTE (bands 12 and 13) frequency bands.

Wilson also has a handy Directional Antenna kit to use with the device.

From many of the reviews on the Samsung Droid Charge, the 2nd biggest complaint (after battery life – common for these “do all” cell phones) was that it was slippery. We just received one and have say that and those reviewers are correct. It’s a slippery little devil. Just trying to key enter contacts and surf the web was a challenge to keep hold of the device. We immediately snapped on on a Body Glove Samsung Droid Charge case and the problem was solved. We could still access the screen, controls and ports but the phone felt much more balanced and secure in our hands.

This particular model of Body Glove snap on case does not have a belt clip or belt clip post so it still fits smoothly in your pocket or purse.
