Signal Improvement On The Road (Part 3)

This is the third part of our series “Signal Improvement On The Road”.

If low cost is your priority in a cellular signal booster, here are a few options.

External Antenna

Extenal Antenna to Cellular Data Card

The lowest cost signal improvement option is to connect an external antenna directly to your cell phone or data card. You’ll need an external antenna adapter that fits your phone or data card’s RF port. You will get considerable improvement with this option but not as much as if you used an amplifier. A big challenge to this option is finding an adapter for your device. Many cell phones these days don’t come with a port that you can reliably attach too. Another downside is that your device is tethered to the antenna. The external antenna option runs in the $30 – $100 range depending on the antenna and cable required.

Low Cost Cell Signal Boosters

The Sleek cellular signal booster by Wilson offers a price point under $100. It features a cellular amplifier built into a phone cradle holder. It comes with a cigarette lighter power cord and external antenna that you mount on your vehicle’s roof. You can use your current car charger to charge your phone or use a Mini USB to Mini USB cable or a Mini USB to Micro USB cable.

A direct connect type power booster requires a connection to your cell phone or mobile broadband card the same as the external antenna option above. If there is no external antenna adapter for your device, another option is a universal type direct connect like the Wilson SignalBoost Universal which uses a universal adapter that attaches to your device using velcro. Direct connect amplifier options run in the $190-$250 range.

Believe it or not, sometimes the most power is not the best option. One of the challenges with cellular signal improvement is the requirement that the inside antenna is not so close to the outside antenna that the two antennas talk to each other (the signal oscillates). If your priority is to have a very portable power booster in places and you cannot get a lot of separation between the inside and outside antenna, then you need less power.

A product that does an excellent job of balancing power and antenna separation requirements is the Wilson Mobile Professional. Signal Improvement On The Road (Part 1)

Sales people, oil field workers, vacation travelers, utility workers, RVers, are just a few of the groups that we have had the pleasure of improving cellular signal for. They all have at least one thing in common, they travel in areas with poor cellular reception. What can we do to help?

The Best

The best option, of course, depends on what your priorities are. Is your priority cost, the most power, the smallest foot print, the easiest to move from vehicle to vehicle or the easiest to use in your car, hotel room, airport, home, office?

Most Portable Power

 If your highest priority is the most power while on the road, then the Wilson Mobile Wireless 3 watt signal booster would be your best option. It provides up to 3 watts of power when communicating with cellular towers, it has 40-45db gain which makes it strong enough to provide a signal in the small confines of a car or truck safely without causing oscillation problems with the outside antenna. The downside of this signal booster is that it is a bit bulky to move from vehicle to vehicle or vehicle to home or work place. It also requires more seperation between the inside antenna and outside antenna especially if you’re trying to use it in areas that don’t have the metal of a vehicle between the two such as your home, office or hotel room.

Basic Cell Phone Signal Boosters

There are 2 basic types of cell phone signal boosters:

  • Direct Connection
  • Wireless

Direct Connection

External Antenna Adapter

The direct connection type of signal boosters require a connection from a cellular amplifier or cell phone antenna to the cell phone (or cellular data card). The cell phone or data card must have a usable port to connect too. On cell phones, the port is used for testing so it is usually hidden under the battery cover or rubber or plastic plug. In many cases the port may be too weak to hold an external antenna adapter and you can actually damage the phone. You must be careful pluging in an adapter. If your cell phone or data card has a usable (accessable and strong enough) you can attach an external antenna directly to it to improve signal strength.

Wireless

Wireless type cell phone signal boosters don’t require a direct connection to a device but do require an amplifier that has a higher gain than a direct connection amplifier (since it has to cover a larger area and sometimes has to transmit the signal through the phone’s case). Typically, the higher the gain of the amplifier, the more coverage area of improved signal you will get. A basic setup is:

  • Outside Antenna
  • Cellular Amplifier
  • Inside Antenna
